PSWD Environmental Workcamp
|
Who:
|
People of all ages who are interested in environmental stewardship
Crawdad Camp is a go for this year. I have several registrations. The dates are set for July 16-21. We will
be departing from Pppago Buttes Church of the Brethren at 9AM on July16th. The setting this year is the most beautiful
of any camp. It is in the high country (6000 ft elevation) pines and we will be hiking into the West Clear Creek
Wilderness area to work each day. The area is big pines and firs as well as oak and a beautiful riparian area
surrounded by tall canyon walls. |

Crawdads are not native to Arizona, they were introduced artificially, have multiplied,
and are damaging the ecosystem for native species of fish, turtles and frogs. Crawdad camp is open to anyone who
is willing to help remove invasive crayfish from this beautiful stream. God will speak through the breezes in the
trees and the sounds of water flowing in the stream. Biologists who will share information about restoring native
fish populations will visit us. Bible study will focus on God’s love for all of creation and the role of humans
as caretakers of creation. |
|
|
The daily routine will require considerable hiking. The camp will be at 6500 ft elevation
and the stream is 600-700 feet below. Hiking at high elevation is more difficult than where most of us live. We
will take it slow and easy, but be prepared to make it under your own power. Also, there is no running water at
the campsite, so we will haul in all of the water we use there. Typically, the weather is comfortable but bring
clothing for hot, cold, and rainy conditions. Most folks wear swim type clothing because we usually end up swimming
each day. Lightweight nylon pants and long socks are also a good idea. Also, if you require any medications, bring
them along. If you have any special dietary needs, let us know early so we can accommodate you. |
|
|
Recommended Equipment List: Bedroll and sleeping
pad, Cup, Daypack, Hat/sunglasses/sunscreen, Watch/alarm, Flashlight/headlamp, Water bottles, Rain jacket, Extra
batteries, Tennis shoes to wear in the water, Boots, Lots of socks, Sandals for wearing in camp, Personal toiletries,
Bible, notebook and pencils, Camera |
|
Camp activities will include daily Bible study and devotional time, talks given by guest biologists and of course,
crawdad catching. Primitive camping, including sleeping in tents, outdoor bathrooms and outdoor cooking, allows
campers to experience God's creation firsthand.
