CORE VALUES
The core values of Hillcrest establish the standards and set the tone that support the human relationships of this community. Multiple ministries at Hillcrest occur in a complex web of relationships. Broad interaction is essential within and between staff and residents. Maintaining a productive community requires all relationships to be based upon Integrity, Service, Respect, Collaboration and Stewardship.

HILLCREST HIGHLIGHTS AT A GLANCE
Hillcrest residents live days filled with plans, accomplishments, fun-filled activities and community involvement. Listed are some of the "daily" highlights of this past year that have brought our mission and vision statements to life:

  • Census stabilized at 385 residents
  • The strategic plan for 7/1/06 to 6/30/09 developed and approved by the Board of Directors
  • Hillcrest Business Associates hosted a fundraising dinner to honor Mr. Ruben Guajardo, the artisan who created the chapel doors for the new Dean Kieffaber Chapel at Hillcrest
  • A luncheon was held to honor major donors and Hillcrest benefactors for their generous giving to Hillcrest
  • Hillcrest served 200 people as an official host site for National Senior Fitness Day.
  • Bridges to the Future II campaign continues to provide funding for the Good Samaritan Fund. Over $2.1 million has been received to date. The goal is to raise $5 million in 5 years.
  • Hillcrest has two residents who are 104 years of age: Leona Sheridan and Frieda Saines
  • The Hillcrest website: www.livingathillcrest.org has special planned giving pages that include up-to-the-minute news from Washington and Wall Street, Hillcrest donor stories, and the syndicated column, "Savy Senior"

  • Meeting House Building Lofts are completed and occupied
  • Maple Court is in the final stages of construction and will have occupancy by the end of summer 2007
  • First floor of the Meeting House is near completion with occupancy expected in the near future


NOTABLE HONORS RECEIVED BY HILLCREST

Hillcrest once again has received various honors from different organizations throughout the fiscal year:

  • Association of Fundraising Professionals recognized as a nominee Hillcrest friends Edwin and Kay Coffeen for Outstanding Philanthropists, Hillcrest boar member Jan Paulson for Outstanding Volunteer Groups
  • Hillcrest resident Robert Rodriguez received the Outstanding Older American Award from the City of La Verne
  • Virginia Allen and the Camp Afflerbaugh Program received a Community Hero Award at the Los Angeles County Fair


American Association of Homes and Services for the Ageing

  • Hillcrest nominated Mathew Neely, Vice President of Health Services and the "Heart of Hillcrest" associate program, for the Excellence in Workplace Award


International Association of Homes and Services for the Ageing Award

  • Hillcrest resident Virginia Allen and the Camp Afflerbaugh Program received an Excellence in Ageing Services Award from IAHSA

FUNDRAISING NEWS

  • Total funds raised this fiscal year to support residents who outlive their financial resources or who need help moving into Hillcrest were $938,000
  • Fiscal year 2006/2007 gifts total $1,043,000
  • Total dollars raised for Bridges to the Future II Campaign $2,136,000
  • The 2007 Good Samaritan Dinner (formerly known as the Annual Endowment Dinner) raised over $58,900 for the Good Samaritan Fund
  • Total dollars raised this fiscal year to support the Brethren Ministers & Missionaries Endowment for retired church workers was $375
  • The dinner to honor Ruben Guajardo raised $51,000 for furnishings for the new chapel
  • The Resident Fundraising Committee raised $42,878 for state of the art audio/visual equipment for the new Meeting House


INNOVATIVE HILLCREST PROGRAMS

One of the important elements of the Hillcrest lifestyle is the variety of programs that are offered to meet the needs of residents. Programs that are being continually developed include:

  • Lifelong Learning Educational Program
  • Braille Institute Low Vision Classes
  • Program for residents to volunteer at Woods Health Services
  • Afflerbaugh Intergenerational Program
  • Morrison Senior Dining's "Be A Star" performance recognition program for dining associates
  • "You Cared & I Noticed Program" recognizes associates for exemplary service.
  • Annual Hillcrest Memory Fair
  • Hillcrest cable television programming and operations
  • Friday Evening Lecture and Musical Program Series
  • Complete Wellness/Fitness Program

KIND AND GENEROUS

The Residents Association, led by Jerry Davis, Chair, works closely with staff to meet the needs of the community and preserve a happy and active lifestyle among our residents.

Other officers of the association are Lora Lee Russell, Vice Chair; Shirley Heckman, Secretary; and Feme Schechter, Treasurer.

Residents work hard at helping others, including those less fortunate at Hillcrest. The Benevolent Thrift Shop, the Gift Shop, the Country Fair, Chapel offerings, and the Wood Shop require hours of volunteer time, but provide needed funds to help those residents who outlive their financial resources. Here is what they raised this past fiscal year:

*The gift shop will be moving into the Village Center and will have expenses so this explains their need to keep a reserve on hand.

VILLAGE CENTER HIGHLIGHTS

  • The stained glass window in the Meeting House and the carillons on the new Bell Tower (funded by friends of Hillcrest) were provided by the Miriam Young estate
  • Gifts were received to fund the stained glass windows in the new chapel
