Christian Beliefs & Practices (former title Christian Faith & Ethics) will examine a range of contemporary Christian beliefs and practices (Anabaptist, Reformed, Lutheran, Roman Catholic, etc). We will explore how faith is expressed in practices, including worship and ministry, in these traditions. Students will be encouraged to reflect on the connections between their own beliefs and practices. Short written papers related to our readings will be assigned for each class meeting.

Instructor – Pamela BrubakerA Christian social ethicist and Church of the Brethren member, Dr. Brubaker researches and publishes on topics of economic ethics and feminist studies in religion. She teaches courses in Christian ethics and gender and religion at California Lutheran University. Dr. Brubaker taught at institutions of higher education in Ohio before coming to CLU. She is a member of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Christian Ethics.

Required Text Practicing Theology: Beliefs and Practices in Christian Life, ed. by Dorothy Bass and Miroslav Volf, from Eerdmans. Students are to obtain their own textbooks.

Instructor – Ronald Faus is the present pastor of Circle of Peace and has also pastored the Charlottesville (VA) Church of the Brethren. He holds a master of divinity from Bethany Theological Seminary and a bachelor of arts degree from Elizabethtown College.

Required Text Faith Seeking Understanding: An Introduction to Christian Theology (original 1991 ed.) by Daniel L. Migliore. Students are to obtain their own textbooks. Church of the Brethren source readings will be supplied by instructor.
